Commuted Sums benefit two sports clubs in Hessle

Two clubs in Hessle have completed their improvement schemes with funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments.

Hessle Lawn Tennis Club received £7,280 from Commuted Sums and raised £1,000 of their own funds towards the £8,280 roof refurbishment project at their home on Boothferry Road, Hessle.

Hessle Rangers Associated Football Club received £20,000 from Commuted Sums and raised £6,156 of their own funds towards the redevelopment of the sports hall on their site at Bilsdon Park, Beverley Road, Hessle. In addition to this funding, St Anne's School and Sixth Form College, who are relocating to a site adjacent to the sports hall and will use the hall during the school day, also contributed towards the project.

Hessle Lawn Tennis Club's clubhouse was built in 1976 and the existing roof had cracks and holes in the felt, allowing water ingress. Hessle LTC have completed the roof upgrades, which involved removing the existing fleshing and replacing rotten wood where necessary. The roof was then completely re-covered and new edging was installed. The whole surface was then covered with an aluminium solar reflective paint.

Michael Alsop, Club Treasurer at Hessle LTC, said: "The standard of the work was excellent and the visual finish much improved. The clubhouse is now watertight and fully useable by club members for the foreseeable future. This is greatly appreciated because the clubhouse is a major attraction in securing new and retaining existing members."

Hessle Rangers Associated Football Club is a charter standard football club consisting of 26 boys, girls, senior male, and senior female teams which delivers football activity to boys and girls from ages four up on a weekly basis, either through teams or First Touch Football and Wildcats sessions.

The club uses the former Hessle High Lower School Sports Hall, Boothferry Road, Hessle, as a training facility in the evening for training purposes for their many teams.  The hall is also used by St Anne's School during the school day.  This joint use of the building has worked very well.

The sports hall floor needed to be completely refurbished so that the joint use of the facility could continue. The floor in the sports hall is essential to allow training sessions indoors, therefore protecting the outdoor football pitches.

The completed works have seen the old flooring removed and replaced with new multi-purpose flooring, using the Commuted Sums funding. In addition to this, works to the sports hall have included opening up the external access with a new security door being fitted, replacing the roof, reskimming the storage cupboard floors and marking the new flooring with Futsal pitch markings.

Ricky Skelton, Club Secretary at Hessle Rangers AFC, said: "Hessle Rangers and St Anne's school are delighted to secure matched funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to renovate the sports hall at the club's home on Bilsdon Park, Hessle.

"The funding has helped completely relay the flooring which was previously dangerous and make good the building to create an indoor sports space, which the school will use in school hours, once they open later this year, and the football club will use in the evenings and at weekends, providing football, and potentially other sports, for hundreds of users of all ages, sexes and abilities. The difference is incredible."

Councillor Claire Holmes, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "This funding from Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval has clearly made a huge difference to both of these clubs in Hessle. They can both now look to the future with confidence as they continue to serve the local community."
