Creating safer cultures

Thu, 18 Nov 2021

Safeguarding Adults Week takes place this week (15-21 November) and gives an opportunity for organisations to come together to raise awareness of important safeguarding issues.

This year's theme is 'Creating Safer Cultures'.

Promoting safer cultures is all about how organisations and individuals can take steps to minimise harm occurring in the first instance, whilst simultaneously ensuring correct policies and procedures are in place so that safeguarding concerns that are raised are recognised and responded to effectively.

Each day promotes a particular topic:

Monday, 15 November - emotional abuse and safeguarding mental health

Emotional abuse can have a devastating impact on mental health as well as physical health.

Tuesday, 16 November - The power of language

Language is vital in creating a positive culture and fostering inclusivity.

Wednesday, 17 November - Digital safeguarding

Over the past year an increasing proportion of our lives from work, education to sport and activity has moved online.

Thursday, 18 November - Adult grooming and the Ann Craft Trust grooming and exploitation conference

People can experience grooming and exploitation at any age and in a wide range of contexts.

Friday, 19 November - Creating safer organisational cultures

Today is a focus on including voices of people less likely to raise concerns, whilst promoting reflection and learning in safeguarding practice to promote safer cultures.

Saturday, 20 and Sunday, 21 November - Safeguarding and you

These days are to highlight that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and everyone needs to play their part to effectively create safer cultures.

The national week can help identify key safeguarding issues that residents can share with people they support, run an event or training session to get up to date on the latest safeguarding news and updates, understand their responsibilities in safeguarding adults at risk and take time out to assess their policies and practices.
