Street naming and numbering

To request confirmation of the official address of an existing property, you will need to submit a site plan that shows:

• the location of the property
• the main entrance for the building
• the property boundaries.

The cost for this service is £18.

Request confirmation of existing address

Property owners may request to add a name to their property, change the existing name of their property or remove the name of their property. If the property has been allocated a number, it must continue to retain the number, but a name can be used in addition to an existing number. Only under exceptional circumstances will the address management team consider the removal of a property number, for example a change of access to a non-numbered street.

To add, change or remove property name, you will need to submit a site plan that shows:

• the location of the property
• the main entrance for the building

and, if you are not the freeholder:

• evidence that you have the freeholder‘s permission to make the request.

The cost for this service is £47.

For changes to more than one property, please email your request to streetnaming.numbering@eastriding.gov.uk and we will call you back. The cost for this service is £47 for each address change.

Request a property name change

Names or numbers for developments on an existing street

To request property names or numbers for properties on existing streets, such as infill plots, conversions, merge or splits, you will need to submit a site plan which shows:

• the plot numbers for the development
• any proposed building names for plots
• the street where the development is located
• any surrounding streets and their names
• any surrounding properties and their numbers
• the position of the front door for each property

and, if any buildings are divided in to several properties, such as flats:

• an internal layout plan.

The cost for this service is:

• First address £65
• Each additional address £25.

Street naming, names or numbers for developments on a new street

To request street names and property names or numbers for a new street, you will need to submit a site plan that shows:

• the proposed road or roads
• the plot numbers and area that surrounds them
• any proposed building names for plots
• existing street names and property numbers
• the position of the front door for each property

and, if any buildings are divided in to several properties, such as flats:

• an internal layout plan.

You will also need to provide a proposed name for any new street. If the town or parish council(s) where the development is located has a name bank, please make sure you have chosen the street names from this. You can contact the address management team to get an up to date copy of the name bank:

Request street names and numbers for a new development

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is the responsible authority for providing street naming and numbering services within the East Riding.

The address management team carries out statutory street naming and numbering functions in accordance with legislation outlined in the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847 Sections 64 and 65, The Public Health Act 1925 Sections 17-19 and The Humberside Act 1982 Section 34.

This service relates to:

• new residential and business developments
• new individual property developments
• naming or re-naming existing properties
• re-naming of existing streets.

This is a statutory service the council provides to name streets and name and number properties and it is essential that all properties are given an official address.

Maintaining a comprehensive and high standard for naming streets, and numbering and/or naming ensures:

• the consistency of property-based information across local government and within the user community
• speedy and accurate location of properties by the emergency services
• reliable delivery of services and mail
• visitors can find where they want to go.
