Where are the non-council markets?

Can I trade at a council market?

In order to trade at a council market you must have:

• public liability insurance of at least £5 million, available from insurance brokers or by joining the National Market Traders Federation
• any appropriate licenses if selling fireworks or alcohol
  
• be registered as a food business at least 28 days before trading.

Please note: we do not allow some items to be sold, such as:

• second-hand goods
  
• pre-owned DVDs/CDs
  
• offensive weapons, including kitchen knives
  
• controlled drugs and tobacco
  
• offensive material
  
• fake goods. 

This is not a full list and the final decision will be made by the markets officer.

Casual and permanent traders

All traders begin as casual traders. As a casual trader you:

• will not be guaranteed a pitch, as they are allocated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis
• may not be given the same pitch each time you trade.

You must trade for 6 consecutive weeks as a casual trader before you can be considered as a permanent trader. Once you have traded for 6 consecutive weeks, the markets officer will discuss your options with you. If you are granted a permanent pitch you will be issued with an information pack that explains how you pay and what you should do if you decide you no longer wish to trade.

How can I enquire about a stall at a council market?

Step 1- Enquire

• Pay the appropriate costs by credit or debit card over the phone. 
  
• We can hand you your receipt on the day of the market, or email or post it to you. 
  
• We do not accept cash payments. 

Step 2 – If you want to trade again

• If you wish to trade again simply call the markets officer to book and pay for a stall in the week before the market.
