What does the food services team sample?

The food services team carries out two main types of sampling. First is microbiological sampling to check levels of bacteria in food and second is analytical sampling for quality, labelling and composition testing.

All types of food and drink sold in the East Riding may be sampled by the team.

When will food that I sell, produce or manufacture be sampled?

The food services team has a routine sampling programme for both microbiological and analytical sampling. Samples may also be taken as part of an inspection or in relation to a complaint.

Many microbiological samples will be taken without the sampling officer announcing their identity to the food business. This is to ensure that food is handled by staff in accordance with normal practices used in the food business.

What happens after the sample has been taken?

Food samples will either be tested by the Food Examiner or the Public Analyst. The food business will then be notified by the food services team of of any adverse sample results.
